A constant theme in Julian of Norwich’s Revelations of Divine Love is how deep the love of God is for us.
“God’s love for us is so great that it surpasses the understanding of any living being. Not a creature in all creation can know how completely and how sweetly and with what tenderness he loves us.” (Chapter 6, The Showings of Julian of Norwich. A New Translation, by Mirabai Starr, p. 17 ).
Julian’s understanding of how much God loves us reminds me of the Apostle Paul’s desire that the Ephesians understand the magnitude of the love of Christ:
I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to the know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. Ephesians 3:18, 19
God, your love is beyond my understanding. I cannot wrap my mind around it. So, instead, let me sink into the ocean of your love. May your love fill my ears and nostrils and lungs as I descend into its ocean depths ever deeper. May currents of your love move me throughout my day.
Drown there and you won’t lament it.
The drowned have no regrets.
